25 Slovak Titles at the Summer Film School Uherské Hradište 2023

The Slovak representation at the 49th edition of the Summer Film School Uherské Hradište (28 July – 3 August 2023) will be even richer than usually. Seventeen Slovak feature films, four short student films, and four films by Miloslav Luther, who is this year’s guest of the LFŠ, will be screened.

Shortly after their premiere at Karlovy Vary IFF, multiple Slovak films travel to Uherské Hradište as well: All Men Become Brothers (d. Robert Kirchhoff), Sensitive Person (d. Tomáš Klein), Brutal Heat (d. Albert Hospodářský), Snake Gas (d. David Jařab), as well as the opening film Restore Point (d. Robert Hloz) and the closing film We Have Never Been Modern (d. Metěj Chlupáček).

The New Czech and Slovak Films section also includes historical dramas The Chambermaid (d. Mariana Čengel Solčanská), The Ballad of Piargy (d. Ivo Trajkov) and Il Boemo (d. Petr Václav), the documentary Good Old Czechs (d. Tomáš Bojar), the first fiction film by Zuzana Piussi Unbalanced, as well as Michal Blaško’s award-winning debut Victim. Blaško will also give A Filmmaker's Journey masterclass at the festival.

The films Grand Prix (d. Jan Prušinovský), Invalid (d. Jonáš Karásek), and Buko (d. Alice Nellis) will be shown in the Open Air Cinema. The Slovak-Hungarian full-length animation White Plastic Sky (d. Tibor Bánóczki, Sarolta Szabó) will be shown within the AČFK Distibuce section.

The films Rave to the Grave (d. Vladimír Horník), Homeland of Silence (d. Štefánia Lovasová), No Elements (d. Barbara Vojtašáková) and Monika Mahútová’s Standing Still (Future Frames, KVIFF 2023) togehter create the Selection of Short Slovak Student Films.

Slovak director Miloslav Luther is guest of the festival and on this occasion, the festival will screen 4 of his films: A Path Across Danube (1989), Escape to Buda (2002), Mosquitoes’ Tango (2009) and A Step Into the Dark (2014). He will also give a masterclass.

Ivan Trojan, the main protagonist of Charlatan (d. Agnieszka Holland), which premiered at the Berlinale 2020, is also a guest of the festival.

Children can look forward to the Kids’ Film Cabinet, prepared by the Association of Slovak Film Clubs.
