IFF Cinematik with multiple premieres as well as Viktor Kubal classics

18th edition of International Film Festival Cinematik (September 12 – 17, 2023) brings more than two dozens Slovak films including internationally awarded works such as Photophobia or Stepne.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Slovak Film Institute and the occasion of Viktor Kubal’s centenary, festival will screen his two feature length animations: Brigand Jurko and The Bloody Lady.

In the Cinematik.doc competition, eight films are up for the best Slovak documentary crown, three of which are screened in Slovak premiere: Truth Is All There Is (dir. Maroš Brázda), A Happy Man (dir. Soňa G. Lutherová), and All Men Become Brothers (dir. Robert Kirchhoff). The selection also includes Andy Warhol – The American Dream (dir. Ľubomír Ján Slivka), What Did You Do to the Russiand? (dir. Michal Fulier, Jana Bučka Kovalčíková), The Shift (dir. Jaro Vojtek), Territory of Imagination (dir. Paula Maľárová), and Grand Canyon (dir. Pavol Barabáš).

Highlights of the non-competitive section In the House are Venice-awarded Photophobia (dir. Ivan Ostrochovský, Pavol Pekarčík) and Locarno-awarded Stepne (dir. Maryna Vroda). Audience in Piešťany can also look forward to four films that premiered in Karlovy Vary at the beginning of summer: Restore Point (dir. Robert Hloz), Brutal Heat (dir. Albert Hospodářský), A Sensitive Person (dir. Tomáš Klein), and We Have Never Been Modern (dir. Matěj Chlupáček). Traditionally, the selection includes student films from Academy of Performing arts in Bratislava – Connected (dir. Peter S. Kološ), Standing Still (dir. Monika Mahútová), Homeland of Silence (dir. Štefánia Lovasová), Dinner for 2 – Breakfast for 1 (dir. Kristína Žilinčárová) – and from Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica – We Didn’t Ask to Be Saved (dir. Mariia Yurchenko), Shades of Light (dir. Dáša Ferková), Scattered Nest (dir. Valery Neskaradziany).

Internationally successful films are also part of the Other Spaces section: Power (dir. Mátyás Prikler), Tony, Shelly and the Magic Light (dir. Filip Pošivač), and White Plastic Sky (dir. Tibor Bánóczki, Sarolta Szabó). Three shorts round up the selection: Diseas (dir. Jonáš Karásek), The Touching, and The Next One (both dir. Dominik György).
