New and classic Slovak films at 29th Art Film Fest in Košice

29th edition of International Film Festival Art Film Fest Košice (June 16 – 23, 2023) will present a lot of new Slovak films, will celebrate 60th anniversary of the Slovak Film Institute, and will commemorate life and work of two Slovak legends – Juraj Jakubisko and Milan Lasica.

Three Slovak films are up for festival awards: White Plastic Sky (d. Tibor Bánóczki, Sarolta Szabó) was selected for International Competition of Feature Films, while Liquid Bread (d. Alica Bednáriková) and Strigov (d. Barbora Berezňáková) were selected for International Competition of Short Films.

Non-competitite Panorama section will premiere a new doc on Czechoslovak New Wave A Czechoslovak Fairy Tale (d. Christian Paigneau), and Love & Anarchy includes latest film by Viera Čákanyová Notes from Eremocene. 14 films will be presented within Slovak Season: ± 90 (d. Marek Kuboš), Andy Warhol – The American Dream (d. Ľubomír Ján Slivka, Work in Progress), Goldilocks and the Glorious Losers (d. Rasťo Boroš), Invalid (d. Jonáš Karásek), Power (d. Mátyás Prikler), We Have to Survive: Fukushima! (d. Tomáš Krupa), Victim (d. Michal Blaško), The Countdown - The Last Film of Ivan Palúch (d. Martin Palúch), The Ballad of Piargy (d. Ivo Trajkov), The Word (d. Beata Parkanová), The Chambermaid (d. Mariana Čengel Solčanská), Shadowplay (d. Peter Bebjak), The Shift (d. Jaro Vojtek), and Territory of Imagination (d. Paula Maľárová). Film She – Hero (d. Mira Fornay) was selected for Movies for Kids.

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Slovak Film Institute, festival will present six Slovak classics: Seven Days Every Week (d. Eduard Grečner), Wild Lilies (d. Elo Havetta), The Barnabáš Kos Case (d. Peter Solan), A Case for the Defence Attorney (d. Martin Hollý), Brigand Jurko (d. Viktor Kubal) as well as Over Mountains, Over Valleys (d. Karel Plicka) accompanied by David Kollar and Tomáš Mutina.

The festival will pay tribute to Juraj Jakubisko with three of his films: The Prime of Life, Deserters and Pilgrims, and Freckled Max and the Ghosts. It will also remember it’s former President Milan Lasica with his film Sweet Games of the Last Summer (d. Juraj Herz).

Industry Programme will tackle topics such as filming in the East of Slovakia, expanding the audiovisual workforce, or special and visual effects. Peter Bebjak, Peter Neveďal, Martin Palúch, Radka Šišuláková, and Béla Tarr will give master classes.

Rodinné filmové striebro, a new book published by the Slovak Film Institute, will be presented during the festival. It consists of 60 essays on 60 classic and contemporary Slovak films written by 60 authors from Slovakia, Czech Republic, and other European countries.
