Liquid Bread is heading to Clermont-Ferrand

The prestigious Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival (27 January – 4 February 2023) will present student film Liquid Bread by Alica Bednáriková in the International Competition, while the Slovak Film Institute will offer an informational and promotional point for Slovak cinema at the Short Film Market (30 January – 1 February 2023) for the fifth time.

The short film Liquid Bread, produced by the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, had its international premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in the La Cinef section and was later screened within the Future Frames selection (European Film Promotion programme) during the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film depicts three generations of one family from southern Slovakia under the same roof, whose peaceful life is shattered by the visit of a granddaughter, opening up a tragic-comic past and family secrets. “I find it interesting to take a closer look at how generations influence one another. Directing the sequences of the late 80’s/early 90’s was very entertaining, especially because of the costumes and make up. We could really have fun with it, me and make-up artist Danka Táborská plus costume designer Evka Miklisová. Also, many of the costumes belonged to my parents or my friends’ parents, which created a certain familiar authenticity. To me, the first generation is the strongest one. The grandparents watch their tiny innocent actions snowball into the consequences, but they are mere observers, as if it didn’t concern them anymore. They keep on swimming, without looking back,“ said the director Alica Bednáriková for the monthly magazine Film.sk.

In cooperation with the Czech Film Center and the Slovenian Film Centre, the Slovak Film Institute is participating at the Short Film Market for the fifth time, where Slovak short films will be presented to film professionals from all over the world under the umbrella name Central European Cinema.
