Successful Start of Summer for Slovak Films

Slovak films marked couple of successful results in the last days: not only they received awards at the prestigious 48th Karlovy Vary IFF, but they also scored at festivals in Munich, Germany, Lagow, Poland, Fest Anča in Žilina and FEST in Portugal.

The 31st Munich FF (28. 6. - 6. 7. 2013) screened the critically acclaimed film Môj pes Killer (2013) by Mira Fornay in the CineVision section. The Jury, consisted by Aggeliki Papoulia, Jean-Marc Barr and Luis Miñarro granted the film with the CineVision Award, which the festival, in co-operation iwth SENATOR FILM, gives to best first and second feature films. The Slovak-Czech title also received 12 000 €, which it shares with the Mexican film Halley by Sebastián Hofman. The verdict of the Jury was: „The Cinevision Jury decided to give the award ex aequo to Halley by Sebastián Hofmann and My Dog Killer by Mira Fornay. The jury decided to celebrate two films. Because both films were created with simplicity. They were able to tell a story, make cinema and were audacious in presenting a contemporary sociopolitical reality while exploring the existential human condition. Both films revealed talented new directors using strong leading actors that drove the story.

The Cannes and Annecy winner, animator Matúš Vizár, was successful with his short animation film Víťaz Pandas (2013) at the domestic festival of animation films in Žilina Fest Anča (27. - 30. 6. 2013). The Anča Award was given to him by the Jury consisted of Ulrich Wegenast (DE), Michaela Pavlátová (CZ) and Emma de Swaef (BE). According to them, it is „a provocative, bold, entertaining and apocalyptic film with enormous energy.“ Besides the prize money of 1000 EUR, Vizár received a statuette made by Braňo Laho.

Bells of Happiness (2012) by Marek Šulík and Jana Bučka was presented at the oldest Polish film festival, the 42nd Lubuskie Film Summer (30. 6. - 7. 7. 2013) within the Documentary Film Competition. It received the Silver Grape Award at the festival.
