Slovakia competing and training professionals in Jihlava

The 17th edition of Jihlava International Documentary Festival will be held from October 24 - 29, 2013. Slovakia is represented not only in the festival programme, but also industry programme for film professionals and in several accompanying events.

OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

In the competition section Between the Seas, for countries and nations of Central and Eastern Europe, Robert Kirchhoff's Normalization (2013) will take part. The film is the result of director's 8-year investigation of an unresolved murder case in the Czechoslovak judiciary that began in 1976.

The Czech-Slovak co-production film Eugenic Minds by Pavel Štingl, which is competiting in the Czech Joy section, discusses the history of an idea with monstrous consequences, presented in the style of old newsreels. 

The non-competitive Short Joy section is also giving space to Slovak production: Homo Ciris (2013) by Jana Mináriková is straddling the line between documentary and fiction and takes a loving look at the story of an old man who devoted his life to aquarium fish and dreams of entering the underwater world.

INDUSTRY

The Industry festival programme will run the 10th edition of the East Silver Market, which supports producers and distributors from Central and Eastern Europe. Nominated film are competing for The Silver Eye Award. Slovakia is represented in the short documentary category by Mináriková's Homo Ciris (2013) and the full-length category by Kirchhoff's Normalization (2013) and All My Children (2014) by Ladislav Kaboš.

The 2nd edition of Emerging Producers is to interconnect talented European producers with film professionals, especially those working in documentary cinematography. Barbora Hessová (AH production) is a Slovak representative. She is a producer of the successful student film by Miro Remo Arsy-Versy (2010), now production Comeback, a feature documentary about released prisoners of the same director. She is also participating on is Parlika, a documentary about a woman fighting for the women‘s rights in Afghanistan, directed by Sahraa Karimi and many others.

The international worskhop Ex Oriente Film is dedicated to development and funding of creative documentary films from Central and Eastern Europe. Katarína Hlinčíková and Barbara Janišová Feglová will presents their Homo Video (2013) and Michal Kaboš and Bibiana Beňová their project Ghosts.

The Visegrad Accelerator project is aimed at interconnecting professionals from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland attending Jihlava IDFF 2013. This event opens the possibility to establish a creative Visegrad platform initiating and expanding various film activities through meetings of film professionals, critics and festival representatives from Central European countries. The Slovak Audiovisual Fund is represented by Martin Šmatlák.

WORKSHOPS AND MASTERCLASSES

In co-operation with the Slovak Film Institute (SFÚ), the Workshop section will present the Slovak Short Film presentation, introduced by the film theorist Mária Ferenčuhová. Her colleague, the film theorist Petra Hanáková, will be a guest of the session. There will be ten short film presented altogether. Scenes from the feature documentary on the fights of the Slovak army against the Sovient Union in 1941 From Tatras to the Sea of Azov (1942) will also be screened.

A masterclass entitled Kerekes and Ostrochovsky: Velvet Terrorists, which will be led by two Slovak directors and producers, is focused on production especially in the documentary environment. Kerekes and Ostrochovský are signed under the new documentary Velvet Terrorists (2013), a Slovak-Czech-Croatian co-production.

OTHER ACCOMPANYING EVENTS

The Kinečko magazine will let the festival visitors try out the celuloid material and edit their piece of film in their project Pristrihni si.

For the second time, the festival will also be a framework for one of the workshops of the scriptwriting and scriptediting platform MIDPOINT - miniMIDPOINT. The workshop is organized for the ex-participants, Slovakia is represented by Jakub Viktorín.
