Slovak films in Sydney

The 5th edition of touring Czech & Slovak Film Festival in Australia is heading to its last stop. After the screenings in Melbourne, Canberra and Perth, festival will take place in Sydney (May 16 – 20, 2018) and will introduce seven feature and six short films.

A five-day showcase will open with a co-production film by Jan Svěrák Barefoot and close with the international premiere of Andrea Sedláčková´s music and dance film Backstage. „We are very pleased to bring a film that portrays the life of young Slovak generation (Backstage) to Australia. Our audience in Sydney not only grows old, but also young, it expands. This film, as well as most of our selection, is the product made possible thanks to Audiovisual Fund, which makes us very proud to present to international audience.” said the Slovak producer Silvia Panáková of Arina film production.

The programmers also selected the most attended domestic film in Slovak cinemas in 2017 All or Nothing (d. Marta Ferencová). On the same day will be screen a directorial debut of György Kristóf Out, world premiered at last year’s edition of Festival de Cannes. Festival also welcomes all family members with Oddsockeaters, an animated Czech-Slovak-Croatian co-production. Director, screenwriter and animator of the film Galina Miklínová won the Trilobit 2017 Award - Children's Jury Prize and was nominated for Slovak national film award Sun in the Net in the category Best Animation. The only documentary screen this year will be the Slovak-Czech co-production Okhwan's Mission Impossible by director and screenwriter Marek Mackovič about a man who crosses the borders of continents and his physical limits on bicycle to support the re-uniting of the two Korea. As a delegate of archive films, a co-production of Czechoslovakia and the Federal Republic of Germany Forget Mozart directed by Miloslav Luther will be presented.

Alongsiede with the features, film festival will introduce also shorts and student films of Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. „The audience, mainly Australians were doubtful about the selection in the beginning. Now, they accept our decision and look forward to the screenings.“ added Ika de Detrich, IKSIMA Films director in Sydney. The festival will present The Truck (d. Adam Mach, Michal Blaško), Strawberry Days (d. Eva Sekerešová), 39 Weeks, 6 Days (d. Joanna Kożuch, Boris Šima), Night in a Hotel: Room No. 306 (d. Martin Hnát), Tots (d. Vanda Raýmanová) and Mimi & Lisa (d. Katarína Kerekesová).

Czech & Slovak Film Festival in Australia is organized by ARINA film production and IKSIMA Films, in cooperation with Slovak Film Institute, Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, Czech Film Center and National Film Archive in Prague.

The festival is supported by Audiovisual Fund, Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.
