Slovak Films at the 31st Finále Plzeň

The 31st edition of the film festival Finále Plzeň (April 19 – 24, 2018) brings a programme full of Slovak films. The international jury will select the best films in three categories and choose the winners of the Golden Kingfisher Award.

In the Feature Live Action or Animated Films Competition will vie Ice Mother (d. Bohdan Sláma), The Line (d. Peter Bebjak), Little Crusader (d. Václav Kadrnka), Nina (d. Juraj Lehotský), Out (d. György Kristóf), Little Harbour (d. Iveta Grófová), Barefoot (d. Jan Svěrák) and Garden Store: Deserter (d. Jan Hřebejk).

The Documentary Film Competition will feature four films. These are The Lust for Power (d. Tereza Nvotová), Grey Lizard Conspiracy (d. Maroš Berák), The White World According to Daliborek (d. Vít Klusák) and Heavy Heart (d. Marek Šulík).

Three student films were selected for Student Short Film Competition: successful Atlantis, 2003 by Michal Blaško and Magic Moments by Martina Buchelová. selFISH by Lukáš Figeľ is the only Slovak animation in competition.

In the Nets of 2017 – a non-competition selection of feature films will include DOGG (d. Jonáš Karásek, Enrik Bistika, Slavomír Zrebný, Vilo Csino), Filthy (d. Tereza Nvotová), Kidnapping (d. Mariana Čengel Solčanská), Garden Store: Suitor (d. Jan Hřebejk) and Garden Store: The Family Friend (d. Jan Hřebejk).

Documentary Dimensions 2017 will present Ten Years of Love (d. Adam Hanuljak), Addicted to Altitude (d. Pavol Barabáš) and Červená (d. Olga Sommerová).

The festival programe will also present recent films that are still appearing in programmes of film festivals or in the domestic cinemas. Riding the 2018 section includes two Slovak co-productions, The Interpreter by Martin Šulík and Insect by Jan Švankmajer. Both films were world premiered at the prestigious European film festivals at the beginning of this year, The Intepreter at Berlinale and Insect at IFF Rotterdam.

First Catch will bring Czech avant-premier of feature film Dubček by Laco Halama.

Finále Plzeň is the only platform in Czech Republic also keeping track of television and internet production. Four series will compete in Serial and Non-serial TV and Internet Production Competition: 1890 – Episode 1 (d. Peter Begányi), Shadow of the Ferns – Episode 5 (d. Marek Najbrt), Secret Lives II – Episode 13 (d. Ján Sebechlebský), Behind the Mirror II – Episode 1 (d. Peter Bebjak, Róbert Šveda, Michal Blaško) and Maria Therese (d. Robert Dornhelm).
