Slovak actor Samuel Spišák awarded in Portugal

Young Slovak actor Samuel Spišák, starring as the character of Martin Friedmann in the new Slovak film Broken Promise, was awarded with the Silver dolphin award for the best actor at the Festroia International Film Festival in Portugal.

The 25. edition of the festival took place in Setúbal during September 4 – 13, 2009 and presented two Slovak films: Bathory (dir. by Juraj Jakubisko, 2008) and Broken Promise (dir. by Jiří Chlumský, 2009). The young Slovak talent Samuel Spišák was awarded with the Silver dolphin award for the best actor for the latter.

The film had its international premiere on April 25, 2009 and was selected and screened at various festivals worldwide, winning the main prize of the Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival in the fiction film category.

The Broken Promise is a reconstruction of an original war story of Martin Friedmann-Petrášek, a Slovak Jew from Bánovce nad Bebravou. Martin was a talented football player, who with his team-mates often went to toll the bell at the local church administered by one Jozef Tiso (who was eventually to become the head of the fascist Slovak State).
