Pandas Awarded in Cannes

The Slovak-Czech animation short Pandas by Matúš Vizár marks great success at the Croisette: awarded with 7.500 €, it received the 3rd prize ex-aequo in the Cinéfondation section at Cannes IFF. The award was accepted by the director, present were Peter Badač (producer, BFILM) and Dalibor Kristek (animator). The film was submitted by the FAMU film school (Prague, Czech Republic), where Vizár studies. Pandas are his debut film.

The Cinéfondation Jury was chaired by the New Zeland director Jane Campion (Oscar-awarded for her film Piano), and it also included international filmmakers: director Maji-da Abdi (Ethiopia), actress Nicoletta Braschi (Italy), actress Nandita Das (India), director Semih Kaplanoglu (Turkey). The Award Ceremony was held in the Buñuel Theatre, followed by a screening of the awarded films. The Cinéfondation Selection consisted of 18 student films, chosen out of nearly 1 550 entries coming from 277 film schools around the world.

“The Jury were unanimous in their choice for the awarded films and want to congratulate the filmmakers for the excellence and maturity of their cinematic voices.” Congratulations to all winners!

Pandas are available for users of the Slovak online network Piano.
