A Happy Man to premiere at Hot Docs

A Happy Man, a feature doc debut by Soňa G. Lutherová, will celebrate its world premiere at the biggest North American documentary festival Hot Docs in Toronto (April 27 – May 7, 2023). The film was selected for The Changing Face of Europe programme co-organized by the European Film Promotion.

A Happy Man presents an intimate story of a transgender man and his family, prompting viewers to contemplate universal existential bonds. The film explores the concept of a fulfilling existence. What does it mean to lead a happy life–and what are we willing to risk to achieve it?

Soňa is a documentary filmmaker, anthropologist, and writer. A Happy Man is her first feature-length documentary film. The film was produced by Maroš Hečko and Peter Veverka for Slovak company AZYL Production, and co-produced by HBO Europe and Company F (CZ).

The Changing Face of Europe was initiated by European Film Promotion and Hot Docs six years ago. The showcase focuses on European diversity with films that explore and examine timely topics of urgency within the landscape of contemporary Europe. A Happy Man was nominated by the Slovak Film Institute, an European Film Promotion member.

Another Slovak co-production was selected for The Changing Face of Europe thanks to Czech nomination – The Visitors, directed by Veronika Lišková and co-produced by Peter Kerekes. The film had its world premiere at last year’s Semaine de la critique in Locarno.
