Record Number of Slovak Films in Slovak Cinemas in 2014

In terms of film production, the year 2014 with 26 Slovak and co-production full-length films (thereof only 6 minority co-productions) became the most productive in the history of Slovakia. And the number of premieres was only one less than the record from 2013. Altogether, distributors released 22 Slovak features (10 fiction and 12 documentary) and three quarters of the new documentaries were debuts. Four shorts were released as pre-films.

While in 2012 it was only 90,830 viewers attending the premiere domestic titles, and in 2013 it was 160,151, in 2014 there were 232,567 viewers of the Slovak and co-production first runs which is an annual growth 45.22%. Average attendance per screening of the 100% Slovak film or majority co-production was 41.56 viewers – nearly two times more than in 2012 (21.86 viewers). It means the Slovak viewers are starting to trust to domestic films, finally.

The most successful domestic title of 2014 was the debut full-length documentary by Daniel Dangl and Lukáš Zednikovič 38 about the hockey legend Pavol Demitra. With 113,930 viewers it became not only the most successful Slovak documentary but it became also the fifth most successful domestic title in the era of Slovak independence (since 1993) by admissions. The level of 10,000 viewers was exceeded also by Love in Your Soul by Mariana Čengel Solčanská (45,091 viewers) and documentary All My Children by Ladislav Kaboš (25,523 viewers).
