Polo BielikPaľo Bielik (1919 - 1983)

Director, screenwriter, and actor. He studied at the Drama Department of the State Conservatory in Bratislava [1939-41] and was a member of the ensemble at the Slovak National Theatre. In 1942 – 1945 he worked as a screenwriter and director at the NÁSTUP film company. In 1945-79 he worked as a director and screenwriter at the Studio of Feature Films in Bratislava. He made his directing debut in 1948 with Wolves‘ Liars, a feature film set in the times of the Slovak National Uprising. In the late 1950s Bielik made an anti-war drama set in WW I, Forty-Four Mutineers [1957], and a drama about a man who is alone in his fight against fascism, Captain Dabač [1959]. In the 1960s, he made two popular historical productions – Jánošík I-II [1962-63] and Master Executioner [1966]. His historical drama Three Witnesses [1968] was followed by a break in his directing activities.

He debuted with the medium-length film Junk Shop, 1965, based on a story by Bohumil Hrabal. In subsequent years he became one of the most innovative Czechoslovak filmmakers [The Cremator, 1969, Oil Lamps, 1971; Morgiana, 1972; The Beauty and the Beast, 1979]. In Slovakia, he made e. g. Sweet Amusements of Past Summer [TV, 1969] and Sweet Troubles [1984]. He emigrated to Germany in 1987. He has been filming both in the Czech Republic and abroad. His Czech-Slovak co-production T.M.A. [2009] was screened at the Karlovy Vary IFF 2009.
