Slovakian New Wave in Finland

The pioneers of Slovak New Wave will be presented in the february programme of the Cinematheque of National Audiovisual Institute in Helsinki. The Slovakian New Wave showcase will take place between Feb 8 – 21, 2018 and will introduce one documentary and four fiction films made by five Slovak directors in the Sixties and early Seventies.

The first film will be The Sun in a Net by Štefan Uher, a lyrical story about emotions, growing up and the shy love of a young generation. The next presented film will be Before the Night is Over by Peter Solan, a mosaic of stories of various characters, connected by one night spent in a luxury nightclub. The showcase will introduce also the novel adaptation of Dragon´s Return. Director Eduard Grečner shot a vivid film about love, hate and loneliness with an accent on psychology of the main characters. The last fiction film in this showcase is Wild Lilies by Elo Havetta, lyrical tragicomedy set in a village after WWI. The film selection of The Slovakian New Wave was put together by programmer of the Cinematheque Antti Alanen. The last film of the showcase is Pictures of the Old World (d. Dušan Hanák) - the only documentary in the showcase, inspired by the work of renowned photographer Martin Martinček. The portraits of villagers opens discussion about existential matters of human kind.

Slovak archive films have already been presented to the Finnish audience before. Inspiration of the showcase certainly came from the Midnight Sun FF in Lapland, which introduced the selection of Slovak Films programmed by German theorist Olaf Möller during its 30th edition (Jun 10 – 14, 2015).
