Slovak films in Slovak and Czech cinemas
In 2014, 24 domestic titles is expected to enter Slovak cinemas, a third of the amount during the last four months of the year.
In September, features Children (dir. Jaro Vojtek) and In Silence (dir. Zdeněk Jiráský), minority co-production Places by Radim Špaček and the feature documentary 38 by Daniel Dangl and Lukáš Zednikovič about the Slovak hockey player Pavol Demitra were premiered. The documentary, reaching 111 004 admissions, not only became the most successful documentary in the era of independent Slovakia, but also entered the TOP 10 chart of admissions since 1993, currently ranking No. 6 of the chart.
In October, the first Slovak fairy tale since 2003 entered the cinemas - Love in Your Soul by Mariana Čengel Solčanská, along with the feature documentary by Miro Remo - Comeback, which had its world premiere in the Documentary Competition of Karlovy Vary IFF.
In November, two further feature documentaries are to be released in cinemas: wave vs. shore by the successful cinematographer and debuting director Martin Štrba and Salto Mortale, debut by Anabela Žigová.
Slovak short films were also distributed in 2014: animation films Fongopolis by Joanna Kožuch is a pre-film for Nick Cave: 20 000 Days on Earth and Nina by Veronika Obertová and Michaela Čopíková screened before The White God.
In 2014, a record number of 16 Slovak majority and minority productions are entering cinema distribution in the Czech Republic. after The Candidate, Fair Play, All My Children, Eugenic Minds, Velvet Terrorists, GRADUATES/ Freedom Is Not for Free, Archbishop Bezak Adieu..., Tomorrow Forever and Gottland, seven other titles are reaching Czech cinemas in the Autumn and Winter season: on September 18, the omnibus of ten directors Slovakia 2.0 and the minority co-production Places by Radim Špaček had their distribution premiere, and on October 16, In Silence, Children and Felvidek. Caught in Between and a collection of Slovak short films were released.
On October 23, the Slovak candidate for the Foreign Language Oscar, A Step into the Dark by Miroslav Luther was premiered and December 4 is the date set for the release of Hostage (dir. Juraj Nvota). The latter will enter Slovak cinemas after its Czech premiere, on January 8, 2015.
The greatest distributors of Slovak films in Czech Republic are Mirius FD and CinemArt. The latter prepared a travelling showcase of the most successful Slovak documentary, fiction and animation films for the second time, entitled Contemporary Slovak Film 2014. Within the showcase, features Children, Felvidek. Caught in Between, In Silence and the shorts Homo Ciris (dir. Jana Mináriková), tWINs (dir. Peter Budinský), The Star (dir. Andrej Kolenčík), The Last Bus (dir. Ivana Laučíková and Martin Snopek) and Tiger Fight (dir. Martin Repka), are introduced.
