From Suns to Explosions: A Slovak focus at the 5th Avvantura Film Festival Zadar

A town with the most beautiful sunset in the world, according to the classic director Alfred Hitchcock, will host a section guiding the audience through Slovak cinema. The section entitled From Suns to Explosions. A brief walk through Slovak cinema will present eight films ranging from the 60s to most recent production within the 5th edition of the Avvantura Film Festival Zadar (23. - 29. 8. 2014) in Croatia.

The showcase will open with the debut from the fresh and still fragile post-communicstic 90s, by a director, who held the continuity of the Slovak cinema for over two decades - Martin Šulík's Tenderness (1991). The director will personally present the film. Other archive titles, significant films of the New Wave of the 60s, include Štefan Uher's The Sun in a Net (1962), the establishing film of the movement and Three Daugthers (1967), and the disturbingly absurd Birdies, Orphans and Fools (1969) by Juraj Jakubisko.

Of course, recent Slovak cinema will be also introduced: the section will screen the Cannes premiered creative documentary working with animation segments Blind Loves (2008) by Juraj Lehotský, the first Slovak horror film Evil (2012) by Peter Bebjak and the Berlinale "alumni" The House (2011) by Zuzana Liová and Velvet Terrorists (2013) by Pavol Pekarčík, Ivan Ostrochovský and Peter Kerekes, the latter presented by one of the three directors Ivan Ostrochovský and its Croatian co-producer Siniša Jurišić.

Each screening will be preceeded by a short exhibition of archive photos stills on screen, accompanied by selected compositions from various of these films. It will also be possible to purchase DVDs and publications released by the Slovak Film Institute.

A part of the showcase will later continue to Podgorica, Montenegro.

The showcase is organized by Avvantura Film Festival Zadar and the Slovak Film Institute, in co-operation with the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Zagreb.
