Cinema at the Border introducing Dušan Hanák and new Slovak films

The 16th edition of the Cinema at the Border film showcase takes place in Český Těšín and Cieszyn at the Czech-Polish border, April 29 - May 4, 2014. This year the festival honours the Slovak film director Dušan Hanák, who has recently received The Sun in a Net Award for Outstanding Contribution to Slovak Cinema.

Slovak films will be presented in three sections of the showcase:

The retrospective section dedicated to Dušan Hanák offers his feature debut 322 (1969), Pictures of the Old World which belongs among the most popular archive Slovak films screening abroad, and the titles Rosy Dreams (1976), I Love, You Love (1980), Silent Joy (1985), Private Lives (1990), Paper Heads (1995). The section will also screen his most significant short films: Call Into Silence (1965), Learning (1965), Old Shatterhand Came to See Us (1966), The Mass (1977). In addition, Martin Šulík´s The Golden Sixties: Dušan Hanák will show the director´s profile and works. The retrospective will be supported by the personal presence of the director, who will also present an exhibition of his photographic works.
 
The section called Great War offers six films which have the common theme of witnessing the absurdity of the war. Slovak archive films related to the topic show are: Fortyfour Mutineers (1957) by Paľo Bielik, Deserters and Pilgrims (1968) by Juraj Jakubisko (one story), Wild Lilies (1972) by Elo Havetta, Signum Laudis (1980) by Martin Hollý and The Angel of Mercy (1993) by Miloslav Luther.

The New Slovak Films section will present eleven feature, documentary and animated movies from the last two years: features Miracle (2013) by Juraj Lehotský and The Candidate (2013) by Jonáš Karásek, followed by documentaries Normalization (2013) by Robert Kirchhoff, Velvet Terrorists (2013) by trio of directors Pavol Pekarčík, Ivan Ostrochovský and Peter Kerekes, New Life of Family Album (2012) by Adam Oľha (2012), Exhibits or Stories from the Castle (2013) by Palo Korec, History Lesson (2013) by Dušan Trančík, Footprints on the Ridge (2013) by Pavol Barabáš. Animation films presented include Pandas (2013) by Matúš Vizár, Snow (2013) by Ivana Šebestová and Fongopolis (2013) by Joanna Kożuch.

The Slovak participation and sections at the showcase are organized in co-operation with the Slovak Film Institute.
