Central and East European post-Communism retrospective at San Sebastian IFF

A retrospective entitled Eastern Promises. Portrait of Eastern Europe in 50 films is a part of the 62nd San Sebastian IFF (19. - 27. 9. 2014) programme in Spain and it will introduce 50 films produced since 2000 in the countries that lived under Soviet influence post-World War II. The cycle is aimed to discover the creative wealth of these film industries and the new talents that have emerged in the last decade, putting an end to all kinds of prejudices and stereotyped images and bringing the audience closer to the reality of these countries as they themselves portray it.

Among the 50 titles, Slovak films will also be presented: the Rotterdam winner, second feature of Mira Fornay My Dog Killer (2013), the Berlinale-premiered debut of Zuzana Liová The House (2011), and Cooking History (2009), the successful and awarded documentary by Peter Kerekes. Further co-productions include Wrong Side Up (2005) by Petr Zelenka and Some Secrets (2002) by Alice Nellis. Mira Fornay and Peter Kerekes will personally introduce their films.

The section will be introduced at a press conference held on September 23, 2014 and will be accompanied by the presentation of the Eastern Promises publication, edited by programmer Matthieu Darras. The chapter on Slovak cinema was written by theorist Mária Ferenčuhová.

The short film production will be represented by Checkpoint (2014) by Adam Felix, screened within the International Film Students Meeting section. The film will be introduced by the director, Adam Felix, the executive producer Jakub Viktorín and several other members of the crew. The film will compete for various awards - the Panavision Award, Freak Independent Film Agency Award, Torino Award, BioBio Award and Orona Award. Three films will be selected for the Short Film Corner market in Cannes. The jury's president this year is the French director Laurent Cantet, further members are students, among them the Slovak representative Stanislav Pavlovič.
