Otto Hille, a man from a Czech-German family, prepares an expedition for old and seriously ill Leopold Švarc, understood to be a cleansing experience to make amends for deeds long past. Švarc is accompanied by the loyal, autistic servant Mišel, his cook Jan and doctor Ignác. Otto takes on board insolvent painter Henry. The group sets out on a challenging trip to a large cave where they spend the night. Otto has a vision in which he can see an old event. Leo is aiming his gun at Otfried, his grandfather. Otto enters an old church, looking for atonement, and meets an apparition of his grandfather Otfried who takes him to the past, to 1945. Otto witnesses events that explain what he is carrying with him and Leopold Švarc is hiding.

Filmová dráma o našej prítomnosti. Otto Hille, hlavný hrdina príbehu, je najatý, aby zaviedol starého Švarca do krajiny svojich predkov. Starec by rád prešiel bolestným očistcom k zmiereniu s tým, čo celý život skrýval. Otto sa vďaka tejto ceste vracia do rozpadnutej nemeckej dediny Vitín. Miesta, ktoré je stredobodom celého príbehu. Tu sa tiež stretáva s prízrakom svojho starého otca Otfrieda. Prepadá sa do roku 1945 a stáva sa svedkom udalostí, ktoré sú príčinou jeho nočných mor a desov. Minulosť je kľúčom k prítomnosti.
