Janette is terminally ill and wants to die in a dignified way but this is not permitted under British law. She gets in touch with Dr. Erika in Switzerland, who is willing to help her. Muscular dystrophy, the illness that Janette suffers from, has affected her family for generations. Janette’s mother was wheelchair-bound for decades, becoming a prisoner in her own body. Janette refuses to wait for death in unbearable pain so she opts for a physician-assisted suicide. Before departing on her final journey from England to Switzerland, she has to explain her intention to her family members and close friends. Her son Simon has also inherited this illness and, therefore, has much more sympathy regarding her decision than his sister Bridget. If no cure is found for this illness, he will face the same decision process as his mother. Both children try to persuade Janette to postpone her death. Do we own our life or does it own us?

Janette je nevyliečiteľne chorá a chce dôstojne zomrieť, ale britské zákony to nedovoľujú. V jej rodine má ochorenie na svalovú dystrofiu dlhú históriu, geneticky sa prenáša z jednej generácie na druhú. Jej matka prežila desaťročia uväznená vo vlastnom tele. Janette pozná prognózu choroby a volí si dobrovoľnú smrť s lekárskou asistenciou. Skontaktuje sa s doktorkou Erikou vo Švajčiarsku, ktorá pomáha beznádejne chorým pacientom odísť. Skôr než podnikne svoju poslednú cestu z Anglicka do Švajčiarska, chce svoje rozhodnutie vysvetliť členom rodiny a blízkym priateľom. Syn Simon, ktorý chorobu zdedil, má pre ňu viac pochopenia než dcéra Bridget. Pokiaľ moderná medicína nenájde na ochorenie liek, bude stáť pred rovnakým rozhodnutím ako jeho matka. Obe deti sa však snažia matku presvedčiť, aby svoju smrť ešte odložila. Vlastníme svoj život alebo vlastní on nás?
