Slovakia - guest country at MUCES!

The 11th edition of MUCES - Segovia European Film Festival (Nov 16 – 22, 2016) kicks off featuring Slovak cinema retrospective! A selection of the most iconic titles in the history of Slovak cinematography includes films from the very beginning to the most contemporary ones.

The festival brings four Slovak films in the Spanish premiere within the main competition selection: Eva Nová (d. Marko Škop), Koza (d. Ivan Ostrochovský) and Slovak minorities I, Olga Hepnarova (d. Tomáš Weinreb, Petr Kazda) and Family Film (d. Olmo Omerzu).

The Slovak retrospective section features titles: The Sun in a Net (d. Štefan Uher, 1962), The Boxer and Death (d. Peter Solan, 1962), Birdies, Orphans and Fools (d. Juraj Jakubisko, 1969), I Love, You Love (d. Dušan Hanák, 1980), A Path Across the Danube (d. Miloslav Luther, 1989) and Everything I Love (d. Martin Šulík, 1992).

The documentary section shows gems like Paper Heads (d. Dušan Hanák, 1995) and The Power of Good (d. Matej Mináč, 2002). Another gemstone - a feature animated film by Slovak legendary animator Viktor Kubal - Jurko, the Bandit (1976) is screened within the section Children to the Cinema.

A rich pick of Slovak films is further presented in the sidebar Unheard: Blind Loves (d. Juraj Lehotský 2008), Soul at Peace (d. Vladimír Balko, 2009) and Detour on the way to the perfect illusion (d. Róbert Fiľo, 2016) which are accompanied by six short animated films In the Box (d. Michal Struss), Twins (d. Peter Budinský), Nina (d. Veronika Obertový and Michaela Čopíková), Pandas (d. Matúš Vizár), Who´s there? (d. Vanda Raymanová) and If Not, then Not (d. Vladimír Král).

A special screening of Jánošík (d. Jaroslav Siakeľ, 1921) will be held in the St. Quirce Church. Music for the screening was composed especially for this occasion by Slovak musician and composer Robert Faltus who seeks inspiration in traditional Slovak Folk melodies.

Part of the festival is also a lecture by film historian and publicist Katarína Mišíková focusing on the social realism in films Eva Nová and Koza.
Furthemore, an exhibition of film posters entitled Slovak Cinematography in Pictures will be displayed in the cultural centre La Alhóndiga from Nov 16 to 30.

The showcase of Slovak films at MUCES - Segovia European Film Festival is held in reference to the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
