Second Run will release The Miraculous Virgin on Blu-ray and DVD
Second Run, a UK-based DVD company specializing in the release of important and award-winning films from all around the world, will release Slovak film The Miraculous Virgin (d. Štefan Uher, 1966). The film adaptation of Dominik Tatarka’s novel was already released by French company Malavida.
The Miraculous Virgin depicts the life of young generation of artists during the years of war. Beautiful and mysterious Anabella enters their lives and they fall madly in love with her. Anabella also attracted older sculptor who represents the rational principle. Director Štefan Uher suppressed traditional realistic narration of the story and plays with the distinction between dream and reality, fantasy and truth, imagination and reality. The Miraculous Virgin became one of Czechoslovak cinema’s most admired and controversial works.
New edition also contains special features: digitally restored trailer, short film Marked by Darkness (d. Štefan Uher), an archival documentary on the casting of the titular lead Looking for Anabella and The Story of „The Miraculous Virgin“ (d. Ivan Ostrochovský), an all-new documentary on the film, the talents behind it and its legacy, produced by Slovak Film Institute. The release also includes 16-page booklet featuring new writing on the film by Michal Michalovič.
This is the first Blu-ray release of The Miraculous Virgin. Second Run already released on DVD four Slovak films licensed by the Slovak Film Institute (SFI), The Sun in the Net (1962) by Štefan Uher, Birds, Orphans and Fools (1969) by Juraj Jakubisko, Pictures of the Old World (1972) by Dušan Hanák and Dragon´s Return (1967) by Eduard Grečner.
