The significant international festival of documentary films Sheffield Doc/Fest, will present the Slovak film Cigarettes and Songs at this edition. The festival, which postponed its traditional November date to June, presented and awarded the successful documentary short Arsy-Versy in the past. This year's participant, Cigarettes and Songs by Marek Šulík and Jana Kovalčíková is presented within two sections: Music Docs and Doc/EU. The film is based on the anthropological investigation in Roma settlements in Slovakia, where Jana Belisova collected hundreds of old Roma songs and organized a workshop where six talented Roma singers met with three professional musicians and tried to make music together. The Documentary records one week long meeting of singers and musicians in Veľký Slavkov in August 2009, where songs for the music project were recorded in a local Evangelical church.
